Review – Ramble into Sprint 10 mile race – McKendree University, Lebanon, IL
Date: March 24, 2012
Distance: 10 miles, 10k, 5k
Race Cost: $13!
Total Runners: Around 500 total for all 3 distances
Race Start Time: 8am
Course: Rolling Hills. For the 10 mile course, it’s just one small hill after another. The hills are not steep, but they are continuous. The race is run on country roads, with little or no traffic. The road angle is occasionally steep on one side, so you might want to try and run in the middle if traffic will allow for it. Your hips will thank you for it.
Aid Stations: There are aid stations at nearly every mile. One small complaint – they used styrofoam cups at the aid stations. They’re not environmentally friendly, and also don’t allow you to crimp the top to drink while running. I had more water on my face than in my mouth.
Race Schwag: You get a long-sleeve t-shirt.
Review: This was my first time to McKendree University. It’s a small university, but very beautiful. The race is a lot of fun. A LOT of fun. It’s a simple race, but run like a larger one. Packet pickup took about 30 seconds. You get disposable chip timing, good food after the race, a free t-shirt, and a medal ceremony all for $13 bucks. The mile markers were absolutely perfect. Probably the most accurate I’ve seen at any race. Also, the volunteers were awesome. Full of enthusiasm and quick to shout encouragement. Plus, this race is 3 weeks out from the Go St. Louis marathon, so you can use it in your race build-up.
The only thing I would change is the choice of water cups at the aid stations. But at $13, I feel guilty even mentioning it!
